Scanners: Moving light at a reasonable price for your club or event

Scanners belong to the classic spotlights in lighting technology. Even before the development of moving heads, scanners brought movement into play at concerts and in discotheques by projecting their light beam throughout the entire room.

In contrast to moving heads, however, scanners do not move the entire "heads" of the devices including the light source: instead, the light beam generated by a statically mounted light source is deflected by a movable mirror. Thus the movement of the light is somewhat more limited than with a moving head. While discharge lamps were traditionally used as illuminants in scanners, today's scanners use powerful, white LEDs. Colors and patterns are usually displayed using color and gobo wheels.

Scanner example of use

Although these devices seem to be slowly disappearing from event technology, scanners still have a right to exist. They are an excellent, low-cost alternative to expensive moving-heads for lighting clubs and small concerts. They are also a good choice for stage design in theaters. Since scanners are technically less complex than moving heads, they are also often cheaper to repair and maintain.
